MIDWASTE is the forum made up of representatives from six member Councils located on the Mid North Coast of NSW, whose focus is regional co-operation in waste management, waste minimisation and resource recovery. The six councils include Bellingen, Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Mid Coast, Nambucca, and Port Macquarie-Hastings. The group was established in 2003 and encompasses over 21,000km2 and a population of over 300,000.
In 2014, as part of the Waste Less, Recycle More initiative, the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) supported the development of Regional Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategies across all of NSW, developed by each of the regional waste groups on behalf of member Councils. This document outlines:
- Where are we today?
- Where we want to get to?
- How are we going to get there? and
- How will the Strategy be implemented?
The Strategy was completed in 2014, underwent a full review in 2017 (including an Implementation Plan for 2017-21) and covers the time period 2014-21.
Funding for our regional programs comes from the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), member councils and grant funding. The group meets bimonthly to discuss programs and policy matters and reports annually to the EPA and member Councils.
